Young Nat Talks Some Sense About USA

November 24, 2005

Anna Nuzum, who works for the National Party, and who quit blogging earlier this week, wrote a good post that nicely captures how I feel when I hear people slagging off Americans:

"I just really don't see America as the biggest threat to world peace. I see them as a country who holds many of my beliefs - freedom of speech; democracy; personal responsibility - I see them as an ally."

and:

"America is not the ignorant red neck country that so many New Zealanders WHO HAVE NEVER SET FOOT IN THE COUNTRY think it is. You are very ignorant if you think you can judge an entire country by its leader, music, movies. It's as silly as it is to assume we all have the persona and interests of Ms Clark (who would rather read a book than watch rugby), live in small villages like in Whale Rider, or violent ones like in Once Were Warriors, and our lives are a roller coaster ride like Shortland Street. If you have never been to America I would advise you to hold your tongue before beginning a tirade on the overwhelming tide of American consumerism / How dumb George Bush is / How Americans can't find their own country on a map. You're spouting opinions on an entire country based on the actions of one administration, or unfounded rumors you have no way of knowing whether are true or not."

Yes and anyone who spends a decent bit of time in different parts of the US will learn how much good there is there.

    I couldn't agree more, Scott.
