Serenity

I finally saw Serenity on Saturday! All I can say is - Wow!

Serenity is the film sequel to the Firefly TV series. I have been impatiently waiting for Serenity to come out ever since I heard they were going to make it, more than a year ago. By that stage I had already watched the entire Firefly series on DVD - a few times. Only 14 episodes were ever made, as the series was canned by Fox after bad programming decisions, and lack-lustre ratings.

When I watched the first episode, I thought: "Meh". The second episode had me interested. By the time I had seen the third episode, I was completely hooked. See this review for the Firefly series DVD:

There was a time when Friday nights were reserved for tv time. Picture me, on the floor in front of the tv, begging my kids to play somewhere else... Plleeeeeeaase! It's only on once a week! And then the theme song begins... It's got a bit of a twang... fiddles... And then the words, the spirit. You instantly know what the show's going to be about. It's the American Dream. No... Not the new one about living like Trump in a palace seemingly miles above Manhattan... The real American Dream The one that brought our ancestors. It's about living free, room to stretch out and breathe, self reliance, and self determination. Would a simple television show dare to reach so far?

Firefly dared that and more, bringing the dream to the very stars. Along for the ride are some of the most complex and original characters ever seen in cookie-cutter-land. Then Fox, in true ratings-dazed fashion, lassoed the dream and pulled it down.

If you've ever dreamed of open-spaces, open-minds, and a life lived not without danger but without fear, you must own this collection. You must.

So, like this reviewer, I was hooked, but left hanging, as there were never going to be any more episodes made. Then I heard a rumour that a film sequel was planned to tie up all the loose ends, and to satisfy - as well as cash in on - the thousands of die-hard fans who had been clamouring for more.

Well, it's finally here. It is undoubtedly one of the best movies I have seen. Admittedly, I loved the series, and having seen it, it adds a whole new dimension to the movie. However, you don't have to watch the series for the movie to make sense. It is still an exciting, touching, character-driven action/drama/sci-fi, with very intelligent and dry wit. I couldn't recommend it higher. It is one of the very few movies of the last few years that dragged me in, completely engaged me, and left me pensive and quiet afterwards. The only other one that has done the same is "A Very Long Engagement".

My favourite quote from the Firefly series:
"That's what governments are for, [to] get in a man's way."
- Mal Reynolds, Captain of Firefly-Class Boat Serenity

Another good quote from the Serenity movie:
"We meddle... People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads, and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome."
- River Tam
